How to Get to Bayerisch Eisenstein by Train
Take the train to the Bavarian Forest
The station at Bayerisch Eisenstein is within walking distance of the houses (about 10-15 minutes walk). The trains run every hour to and from Plattling (not at night) where you can connect with or from long distance trains. We are happy to meet you at the station when you arrive and take you back at the end of your stay.
The German train system can be checked at www.bahn.de. There is an English version of the site. You can check not only the times of trains to and from any destination in Europe but also tram and bus timetables.
The information below is correct to the best of our knowledge as at 21.1.2011 but we cannot take any responsibility for its accuracy. Please check everything yourself before you book anything.
If you are making your journey within Germany, we have access to cheaper tickets - please ask us - these cost (return) €65 up to 400km and €115 for above 400km. Generally, if travelling within Germany, the earlier you book, the cheaper the tickets. Also, there are not usually cheaper options for return tickets so you can easily book 2 singles at the same price, especially if you are booking as soon as the tickets become available (i.e. they will become available on different dates for the outward and return journeys).
If you are travelling within Bavaria, the cheapest and easiest way is to use the BayernTicket - €29 for up to 5 adults and all children for a whole days' travel within Bavaria (e.g. from Munich to Bayerisch Eisenstein). Weekdays you need to travel after 09.00 but no restrictions at weekends. This is the cheapest way to get here from Munich city or Munich airport even for just 2 people.
IF YOU ARE FLYING INTO MUNICH AIRPORT, YOU DO NOT NEED TO GO TO THE CENTRE OF MUNICH TO GET HERE - JUST GET THE BUS LINK TO FREISING, TRAIN TO PLATTLING AND CHANGE TO THE TRAIN TO BAYERISCH EISENSTEIN.

Ticketing options:
1. There are now special tickets costing €99 return from London to Bayerisch Eisenstein, bookable from 3 months before travel date, through the German railways office in London, however, as with all cheap 'earlybird' tickets on German railways you have to be ready to book the minute they become available and they are in very short supply - we do not know anybody who has succeeded in booking a ticket at this price. The cheapest we know of was €145 return, booked exactly 3 months before the return part of the journey. NB: the cheap London-Germany tickets can also be used from Ebbsfleet and Ashford but allow extra check in time as it takes a while to find your booking in the system.
2. You can book the whole journey through the German railways office in London - phone 08718 80 80 66, Monday to Friday 09.00 to 17.00. However, while this is the easiest way of doing it, it often also turns out to be the most expensive.
3. Let us use our contacts at the Bahn in Germany for them to get the cheapest possible deals - recently we got a price which was 1/3 cheaper than the price given by the London Bahn office but they are not always cheaper.
4. The most complicated method but one which consistently yields a satisfactory price, even if not always the cheapest:
4.1. Go to the German railways site English version and sort out your journey, both ways. It will give you train times and numbers and platforms for the German part of the journey at least. Then check on the cheapest through ticket available. If you don't want to pay that price or no price is shown, check whether you can get a cheap London-Cologne ticket for the day and time you want to travel. If you can, book it quickly before it disappers and go to step 3.
4.2a Book a Eurostar return ticket. The ideal is to book this through to Cologne but this can be a) expensive and b) too late in the day to get you into Bayerisch Eisenstein in the evening. So you may have to give up and go for a return ticket to Brussels..
4.2b. Go to the Belgian railways site English version and book a return ticket Brussels-Aachen-Brussels. The cheapest option should be about €38 per person.
3. Contact us with your train dates and times Aachen/Cologne-Bayerisch Eisenstein-Aachen/Cologne and we will arrange an RIT ticket for that portion at a fixed price of €115 per person return plus seat reservation charges. (If you wish to pay us for this by credit card, there will be additional 2.5% charge). With this option, children up to 14 years of age, travelling with parents or grandparents, go free.
