Januarythe New Year starts with fireworks at midnight,

all over the village and on the terrace of Haus Sterr, with glasses

of Sekt (German sparkling wine) for all our guests. There is usually good snow for skiing all through January. But from the weekend after New Year when the school holidays end, the village is almost deserted for 3 weeks, until the last weekend in January when the German school half term holidays start, usually staggered over a 4-6 week period.

Average depth of snow on the Arber mountain: 60cm

February is the main skiing season in the Bavarian Forest. The weather is usually cold  (can go down to -18C at night) and there is

plenty of snow. The peak of the skiing season is the Faschingswoche (carnival week) when all the Bavarian schools are on holiday. The village is packed. Best avoided by people without children on holiday that week (21st-28th February in 2009)! The German school holidays usually continue until the 1st weekend in March.

March – from the 1st weekend until Easter, the village is usually

with the longer days and more sunshine, it is an excellent time for skiing.

April – Easter weekend is busy. There are local events – especially the Easter horse parade in Regen. If Easter is early or the winter snow has been heavy there can still be skiing at Easter weekend and walks through the snowy forest. After Easter, the spring walking season gets underway, although the village is still not full. Some restaurants close after the Easter holidays until the beginning of May.

May starts with the traditional raising of the Maypole on May 1st by

the volunteer firefighters, in the village and many other places. May

weather can be very hot and sunny and all of the tourist attractions are open again. It is an excellent time to visit places such as Prague and Passau which can get very full in the summer.

June is when the local festivals really get under way – there are beer and/or medieval festivals somewhere in the region every weekend

from

now until the end of the summer.

July/August are the peak holiday months. In common with the

mountain areas in the rest of Central Europe, there can be periods of

heavy rain, sometimes even exciting thunder storms. But the rain often comes at night. Days are mostly hot, sunny and dry. The high point of the village year is the Ludwigshoehfest in the middle of August – beer festival, shooting competition and medieval market. From this point on, with the days getting shorter, the evenings are a little cooler.

October already shows signs of the approaching winter, often with

clear sunny days and night frosts. There can be early snow falls.

average daytime temperature: 18°C

November to Christmas is the quiet period in the village.

Some restaurants and most tourist attractions close but the towns,

villages, forests and mountains are still there, without crowds. The snow usually arrives in earnest and skiing on the Arber often starts by late November.

December – the quiet period continues for German tourism until

Christmas. But foreign visitors know better and arrive for the

Christmas markets which are in usually in full swing from the beginning of December. The only closing for Christmas is on Christmas Eve when shops shut during the afternoon and restaurants close from mid evening, to allow their staff to celebrate Christmas with their families. From 25th December it is business as usual, with all restaurants open and the ski lifts and ski schools all operating. Only the shops stay closed until 27th.

There is a wide range of events on around Christmas and New Year. This is a selection for 2007:
