THINGS TO DO

Shopping

Bayerisch Eisenstein

We have our own small guest shop.

Bayerisch Eisenstein has:

  • A toiletries shop which has an extensive sections selling baby foods, nappies etc.
  • A bakery/cafe.
  • 2 large sports shops, one with a wide range of other clothing, especially Bavarian style
  • several other shops selling clothes, gifts etc.
  • a butcher's van (also selling eggs and bread) in the village square on Tuesdays and Fridays
  • butcher and bakery vans visit the village on some days of the week
  • a new village shop selling groceries is due to open on 1st August 2010.

There are supermarkets in the neighbouring towns.

Eating out

In Bayerish Eisenstein, there are 6 restaurants, including 1 of the best in the region, several cafes and a pizzeria. There is a large number of restaurants in Zwiesel, of which we particularly recommend 2.

Our favourite local restaurants:

Bayerisch Eisenstein: Poeschl-Stuben, Grenzglashuette

Zwiesel (carfree by train): Waldbahn, Dampfbierrestaurant

Eating out in this area is very cheap - main courses are almost always less than €15 and often less than €10. Dishes are mainly pork or beef based. There is also a lot of fresh water fish, especially trout and game dishes, especially venison and wild boar. The most typical local food is pork with mushroom sauce and dumplings. Most restaurants offer vegetarian options. Most restaurants have a children's menu.

Beer is cheap and varied. The best wine is from the Franken area of Germany or from Austria.
