Car hire in Bavaria, Germany
If you want to do your main journey to and from Bayerisch Eisenstein by train and just rent a car for a few days, we can arrange this with a local car hire company and the cars can normally be taken into the Czech Republic.
3 important points about car hire
- Czech Republic
Some car hire companies will not allow you to take some or all of their cars into the Czech Republic. There are 6 companies listed as operating from Munich airport. We checked their websites on 28.1.2007 and found the following information, which should also apply to rentals from Linz airport:
Hertz do not allow BMW, VW and Audi, convertibles, Landrover and Chrysler Cherokees to be taken into Czech Republic. For other cars you must ask for special document confirming that you have permission (Genehmigung).
Europcar allow cars in the following categories to be taken into the Czech Republic: compact, lower medium class and medium class cars.
Sixt do not allow the following makes of cars to be taken into the Czech Republic: Audi, BMW, Mercedes, VW, Porsche and all Jeeps/Off road cars.
Avis, Alamo/National do not allow any of their cars to be taken into Czech Republic. Budget do not allow the following cars to be taken into the Czech Republic: Audi, BMW, DaimlerChrysler, VW and all convertibles and vans. If you are renting one which is not in these categories make sure you confirm that it can be taken over the border.
We cannot take any responsibility for the accuracy of this information. Please double check with the car hire company when you make your booking.
- Winter travelling
If you are coming in winter, you need to insist that your hire car is fitted with winter tyres if there is any chance of driving in snowy conditions: under German law, the driver is responsible for making sure that the car is fit for the weather conditions and driving with summer tyres in snow could mean the driver being held personally responsible for the damage arising from an accident because the insurance is invalidated. Check the availability of winter tyres when making the booking and again when collecting the car. Some companies charge extra for this. The roads are kept very clear between snowfalls.
Budget announced in autumn 2006 that they were the 1st car rental company in Germany to fit winter tyres to their whole fleet of vehicles, although they do seem to be making an extra charge for this!
- Travelling with children
If you are travelling with children under 12 years or 1.5 metres in height, they must have a child seat or booster cushion. Check when you book that your car hire company can provide these.
